After   "The Principles",the  metronome is the most important practice tool you can use.

Used as shown in " The Principles", it will increase your rate of progress faster than anything else.

Why must I use a metronome?

What type should I get?

Here is what most students do wrong at this point:

Problem: They don't have control and accuracy over the alternate picking. They don't do down-up picking on the eighth notes, and they don't know they are doing it wrong. If they DO the down-up picking, they usually mess it up, lose the beat, hit a wrong string, etc.

Solution: Review all the directions for doing a correct down pick, and a correct up pick, especially the up pick (p.53). Make sure you are able to do the Right Hand String Shifting Exercise, step 3 (p.38) with perfect accuracy. Hitting the wrong string, or missing the note is due to tension in the hand and/or upper arm. Deepening the bottom of your practice by paying much greater attention and more effectively using no-tempo practice and the Basic Practice Approach in general is the answer here.

Problem: The final result of being able to play the song accurately, to a steady beat, is never actually reached. Instead, the student plays the piece with many mistakes and hesitations along the way. Usually, the page is turned anyway!

Solution: After proper use of the Basic Practice Approach to train all necessary movements into the muscles, the transition to the actual rhythm should be made by playing one or two measures at a time to the EXPANDED BEAT.

This means putting the metronome on something slow, like 50, and assigning two clicks for every beat. The first click represents the down beat, the second click the upbeat. The foot must tap down on the first click and up on the second click. (There will be eight clicks per measure, but the foot will tap four).

Two measures at a time, work this up to 120. Then, go back to 50, and play as written, with one click per beat, and the foot tapping 4 per measure.

Amazing Grace
Check  1
When you begin the song, realize that you are playing open strings until the 6th note. This means you must keep a relaxed floating arm, with your 2nd finger ready to play the A note when it comes up. Watch your hand to make sure! Check your shoulder for tension.
Check  2

Watch your pick as you practice those eighth notes no tempo.

Check  3

Measure 6, place 3 on the D in measure 7 AS you play the A note.

Check  4

Measure 11, hold the 2 on the E note (lightly), so it is already there when you need it at the end of the measure.

Final Check

"To know and not to do is not yet to know"

Make sure you can play this whole song along with the background chords at these tempos...

Amazing Grace: 30 bpm                  Amazing Grace: 60 bpm

Amazing Grace: 50 bpm                   Amazing Grace: 80 bpm

Tenting Tonight

Check 1

Make sure you watch the pick hand frequently, and you are accurate with all the picking.

Check 2

Have the 1st finger lightly on the C before beginning. At the end of the measure, place the 2 on the A of the next measure while you play the C on the 4th beat.

Check 3

3rd measure, at the end, while playing the F, make contact with the 2nd finger on the E before lifting 3 off the F.

Check 4

Continue to follow the logic of these "finger habits" throughout the piece.

Final Check

"To know and not to do is not yet to know"

Make sure you can play this whole song along with the background chords at these tempos...

Tenting Tonight:30 bpm                   Tenting Tonight:60 bpm

Tenting Tonight:50 bpm                   Tenting Tonight:80 bpm
