Jeff Loomis

Hi guys!

I'm still getting acquainted with the forum, so I thought I’d share one of my biggest influences as musician and guitarist.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Vwk3-a0k7c

I was initially introduced to Jeff’s playing from his band Nevermore, who are incredible in their own right! Since then, he has released a solo album, allowing him to really stretch his feet, in a musical sense. I am really drawn to his playing, not just for his speed and articulation, but, for a lack of a better description, his feel or the way he “shapes” the notes and tone.
The piece I’ve posted is one of my favorites, and I am working in hopes to perform it one day!

Awesome, love it!

Do you have this music? Are you working on it? You should be.

Fortunately, Jeff released an instructional video where he breaks down a couple of the more intricate arpeggio sections, and offers some insights into his style. To my knowledge, there hasn’t been an official transcription, but I have found many of those to be unreliable anyway.

So, I’ve been working on transcribing it by ear and checking with available performance footage. This has proved to be quite the challenge, both physically and mentally. It has become a real test of my awareness. I guess you could say this piece is one of the reasons I am here

It is really good to have a long term, shoot for the stars project going. It is like when America decided to land on the moon.........there were thousands of benefits that had nothing to do with landing on the moon.

As you work on this, you will improve tremendously regardless of whether you end up playing it like him, but I'm sure you will anyway!
Best,

Haha! Yeah, I have a few shooting for the stars projects in the works, although they vary a bit more in their intensity.

And, yes, that's a great point. The overall impact one experiences can be far-reaching when striving to meet the demands of the music.
That comment has prompted me to review "Practicing One Thing Is Practicing Everything"
