Older Re-Newbie

Postby Roselynne » Mon Jul 09, 2012 6:53 pm

I just ordered Guitar Principles and am looking forward to getting started.

I'm 55, and I tried guitar decades ago. The guitar was cheap and almost impossible to tune without a wrench, lessons were televised -- no feedback -- and I drifted away from it.

The bug hit me again around 2009, but I didn't do anything about it. A few months ago, I got unexpectedly retired, and just last month, my husband's health improved to the point where I could try something "new."

I want to create my own music, so I'm taking online lessons (still can't make any weekly commitments) and learning to read notation.

My callouses are coming along nicely. Despite my small paws, I love my full-size classical guitar and my dreadnaught. Guess what? All else being equal, 55-year-old fingers do stretch!

At the moment, my big issue is consistency. I'll play a song perfectly one time, then next time, it's a total mess. Same with exercises. I never feel like my fingers have truly learned a piece or a routine. So I've been looking for mind/body training, and I hope I've found it.

Yes, Roselynne, you've found it. :D

In using the "Tools" in "Principles of Correct Practice for Guitar", specifically "The Basic Practice Approach" and others, you will learn to burn those pieces and routines into your muscle memory and play them right every time. You have definitely come to the right place. Lots of mind/body training going on here! Enjoy!!!!!!!
Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Practice slow to learn and play fast.

Thanks, Ted!

Aaaahhhh ... BPA revealed! Basic Practice Approach. Duh-uh!

I'm very much looking forward to The Arrival of The Book. Right now I'm exploring the site. It's huuuge. Gotta remember to pick up the guitar, too (hard to forget that part, actually).
