It's a long haul being a guitarist !

Well they say 'it's no fun if it's too easy'. I'm basically a self-taught guitarist, playing 15years and am still working on the stamina aspect of guitar.

Example - I do principled practice 6 out 7 days a week including string bending exercises. However last night I was working on some of the riffs in the Sweet Child O Mine guitar solo - including lots of rapid bends and vibrato. I was using a 335 guitar, 24.75in scale, with 9 gauge strings tuned down to E flat [i.e. v light string tension] but I still after about 5-10 mins my left hand was very tired.

I also perform some the strength exercises in Ney Max Speed Picking DVD once a week on a Tuesday which has helped me enormously to get to this level.

I suppose it's just a case of plenty of exercises, stretching and rest.... and keep at it. ;)

That's right Jules! That reminds me of a thought I had the other day....

When you have made your peace with your purpose, your goal, and your dedication to its path, then "persist" is the only Law.

We must never believe "what is happening should not be happening". We must always, rather, attempt to understand whatever is happening, and to discover the laws of cause and effect that are operating. Guitar students and players often have absurd and unrealistic expectations based on absolutely nothing other than their groundless pre-conceptions.

This understanding has led me to many wonderful things............eventually! :D :D :D

Fantastic news Jules!
.

Jamie summed it up so admirably.

I am very excited to hear that the exercises in my DVD set are being used!, and not just watched with a massive bucket of popcorn! :D :D :D They are, as you found out, amazing!!. I still do some of them!

For endurance try playing a 1/2 hour set, at home initially, but exactly as if it were live. No long pauses to rest and perform one song after another. Practicing technique does not replicate real life performance demands, which are much more advanced.

Thanks for the tips Ney.

Yes must remember to do some Gig length playing to build that stamina aspect too.
