To all: About amps

Postby N E Y » Sun Aug 01, 2010 3:43 pm

This is based on a question posed in another section of the forum. I think many of you need to know few basics about guitar amps:

Tube amps are VERY loud, you need 5 watts at the most for civilian home use.

Solid state amps don't respond to touch like a tube amp. You can shape a note with a tube amp like you do with voice or other instruments. The harder you play on a tube amp the louder it gets-to a point- and the more the note will distort. All done with the right hand. Transistor amps are invariably stiff sounding and limited in that respect, that is why they sound good clean which does not require comparatively much in terms of tone, when they are good. However a tube amp will also always sound fuller and more musical by far than a transistor amp., even clean.

Furthemore...tubes naturally compress the audio going through them. They go into distortion very smoothly depending how much current goes through. Transistors go into square wave right away.Instant BUZZ . Hence the buzzy thinner sound of all solid state distortion pedals and preamps.

It must be kept in mind that there are cheap chinese tube amps that run on very low internal voltage and don't use the tubes properly . They sound, indeed, like someone driving a used razor blade trough your mouth...only very harsh treble and no mids and no lows...You might as well swallow that razor blade..It will be a peaceful experience by comparison....so tube amps can be manufactured horribly as well, although in the West this is unheard off..

The exception with modeling and transistor amps is for certain metal sounds where stiff buzzsaw tone for rhythm single note riffs (Krank, Engl, and line 6 series amps are often the favored tool in the studio) is specifically needed to cut trough double bass and vocals. That is part of a very specific industrial aesthetic pioneered by Trent Reznor (9inch nails)and adopted by metal bands later.

BUT!!! They are used with EMG pickups or certain humbuckers who work well with those amps. Single coils, which have much more tone and richness in harmonics sound thin and flat with those types of amps.

I happen to agree that for low prices and modeling features the Roland cube series is the best in the World for my rather stringent specialized professional demands. I own two micro cubes that are excellent for very specific purposes. They don't -and cannot- replace a tube amp but they can do other things in multiple amp settings and depending on the song and the type of record I am working on .Your demands may be quite different however....

I am currently using one of the tiny Roland cube amps. Great for home use. Much beyond that, I'll need something with more output should I begin performing. Is the Fender Acoustasonic series (mid model) decent for cafe style playing?

I just played through one yesterday ( around $350) about 30 watts or so, and I was impressed. I only played clean on a Ney Mello customized Vigier Shawn Lane model (John Warden ebony fingerboard + added string tree ) and at that comparatively giveaway price it is very hard to find a very good solid state amp that plays clean without sounding harsh, thin, and stiff and downright irritating  . This amp had tons of full low end and dynamic response to touch and great tone. However you should try the distortion modes if you plan to use them, to see if the are equally impressive to you.

In the end, it is your tone and you hold the gavel your honor, and no one else has any say for the final verdict in what suits your specific tone needs! :D :D
