Check out SSL genius designer and Sony digital Oxford designer Paul Frindle's answers to these questions if you record professionally or not. You --->need to know this if you engineer, produce or mix. Read the whole thread.

Thanks for posting this. So far from reading this what I've gotten is that the whole "Emulation" craze is a myth! "Emulation" is just a term used for marketing and to sucker people into thinking its something whose very name connotes value.

I've checked this forum out before and I just found that it seemed to be mostly for pro engineers bickering about technobabble stuff which I couldn't afford anyway. Its cool to have a link to a real gem that could be useful for almost anyone to read. Thanks Ney.

Most people who use emulation plug-ins have no direct experience with the hardware that the plug-ins are modeled from. Some that do swear black and blue by certain emulations, for example Universal Audio's.

At the end of the day there are very few who are in a position to conduct that comparison, and it's a fruitless exercise anyway. The point is, is it a useful tool? Only your ears can tell you that. And you can only trust your evaluation if you have spent enough time developing your hearing in recording processes to know what you are listening for.
