Recording distorted guitars DIRECT

Here is an excellent mp3 transcript of a professional NYC studio session-with slipperman- focussed on recording distorted guitars direct. The reason is that sometimes indie budgets and time do not allow for the best, major label level quality sound which is micing the amp speaker cabinets with microphones. In that case you have to record the guitars direct. Warning: Contains real-deal Rock language and attitude!

Nice I just checked this out. The best thing for me about these things is to show that even the top pros using the best gear still struggle with the exact same issue I do on these things. One of the main points in this is that you can make DI guitar work (although it will never be as good as the real thing), but you will most probably have to dig in to some serious EQing skills. Notably, the EQ controls on the guitar and amp if you're using one, will likely NOT be sufficient. Especially, subtractive EQ can work wonders. Before I listened to this I had reverted to the same conclusion from learning it the hard way, except I am using a Mackie instead of a Neve :D .
Also, remember that great songs and guitar tones were done with DI like "black dog" and Sergeant Pepper's lonely hearts club, and I think in this he also mentioned Anthrax does as well.

Yes indeed I'm reading it. Not putting it into practice and maybe never will, but I find it interesting.
