Right hand muting

Postby polydorus » Sat Jun 04, 2011 5:40 am

I have a question about muting unwanted strings with the right hand.

The R&B course recommends using the side of the hand Karate chop style.
This seems like a natural way to do it, but it is quite hard to learn to do it accurately so that all unwanted strings are muted but not the one you are playing.

The other way that I have seen recommended is to use the side of the thumb, so the thumb side of the hand has to be rotated to bring the side of the thumb close to the strings.
This seems awkward to me, but is does seem easier to mute accurately using this style.

I wonder if any one has any thoughts on the merits of the two styles?

I would also like to know everyone's thoughts on this. The course says to use the pinky side of the hand but I'm currently using the fat, fleshy base part of the thumb. This feels comfortable to me and I find I don't have to change my hand position very much at all, I mostly just have to lower my hand toward the strings and angle my wrist slightly toward the floor so I don't mute the string I'm playing.

In this matter, I would say do whatever you find works for you.

Thanks Jamie

Like Tiffany I have been gravitating towards the intermediate position.
I didn't want to use a method that would cause problems later.
