Starting over from scratch

Postby Manning » Fri Jul 22, 2011 2:05 pm

Last night I ordered The Principles Of Correct Practice For Guitar, Chords & Rhythm, The Guitar Principles Rock & Blues, and Hammer-ons & Pull-offs. I am 42 years of age. After many years of struggling, I realize I have to start over, and get back to some basics. First and foremost, I need to learn how to practice correctly. I may at some point inquire about one on one lessons via web-cam, but for now I am going to utilize the information provided within the items I just purchased, and on this forum.

I received the books and DVD in the mail yesterday(that was some seriously fast shipping). After glancing though the books I can tell these will address the issues that have been plaguing my playing. Although I can play all of the basic chords well - there are a couple chords that I am having trouble changing to quickly, and it is messing up a lot of the songs I want to play.

The new guitar is still in the shop being set up, so I can't do any actual practice, but I am going to spend the better part of the day reading in these books. I get the feeling these books (and DVD) will become an integral part of my guitar practice.

It appears my musical tastes differ from the majority here, but that's OK. I was reading how it is important to pick out a few songs and learn them from beginning to end. Aside from correct practice, it is important not to become musically starved.

For starters, the songs I have picked out are as follows:

Iron Maiden's - Hallowed Be Thy Name
Stone Temple Pilots - Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart, Interstate Love Song
Guns N' Roses - Rocket Queen, Paradise City
Judas Priest - Victim of Changes
ZZ Top - I Need You Tonight
Van Halen - Unchained
Dio - Don't Talk to Strangers
Pearl Jam - Evenflow
Tool - Vicarious

Sounds good Manning. That is quite a list! Start with one, and complete that. Post videos of you practice as you and your progress will go much faster.
Best,

Sure, I can narrow it down to one song. As far as posting videos on the internet, if it is ok with you I want to go the one on one lesson route. I have to purchase a web cam before that happens.
