Why do flangers have such a pronounced swoosh with overdrive but do not have that sound when played clean?

..Because the sustain of a note in overdrive is much longer...The note is much longer and the tone is much richer in overtones....All that gives the flanger much more signal. much louder, much longer and the flanger just processes much more and you hear much more audio wave form processed.
