Classical/Fingerstyle course skills translation to pick?

Postby vzk » Fri Apr 20, 2012 11:13 am

Hi everyone. I'm considering getting the Classical/Fingerstyle course and focusing on that for the next year, or however long it takes.

I'm wondering whether I might expect to be able use the right hand lessons in that course--which I know are based on p-i-m-a--for playing with a single pick. I am interested in acoustic fingerstyle (blues and John Fahey--not classical much), but it would be great to be able to play electric (for fingerstyle rock, e.g. Stairway to Heaven & Dust in the Wind) and I know most electric players use a pick. (Lindsey Buckingham a notable exception & I think he is great.) Is it completely unrealistic to expect that building right hand skill in fingerstyle will give me any head start in building right hand skill with a pick?

Thanks!

No, it is not unrealistic, it is quite right on. Many of the methods in this course train you to not just use your fingers properly on the string, but how to connect your entire arm to the string. And THAT is really the secret of great right hand control. This course will give you an understanding of technique for both hands that you will not find anywhere else.

From the point of view of the entire direct playing mechanism, which is everything from the shoulder blades to the fingertips, pick technique and fingerstyle have much in common. That is why, even though I have not practiced with a pick for probably 20 years, I can always pick at 120 bpm in 16th with great strength. It is because my "right arm" technique is highly developed and maintained through my daily fingerstyle practice.
Best,
Jamie

Cool!

One follow up question--I saw that at least one other guy in the video posts is or was working on both the fingerstyle and the rock & blues course at the same time. This idea appeals to me, but It seems that would require two separate practice sessions each day, which I'm not sure I could do consistently, and would potentially slow down my learning in each. Do many people try this?
