Walking exercises @ 60bpm

Postby AXE » Sat Nov 21, 2009 1:11 pm

Hello guys!

I finally made a video of myself playing the walking exercises after a long time of thinking about it ;)
After a lot of wasted nerves (a few false attempts, the software messing the best one, the neighbors repairing their flat and making lots of noise...) this is the result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv3OwTRftEc

All comments welcome!

Upon watching it I realized how important it is to video record yourself. Even without your feedback I noticed that besides the fingers I'm walking with my jaw too  And also - I'm blinking on every beat
All right, your turn

Great work Axe. You have brought it to the point where the "flaws" are subtle. I will describe them to you and perhaps you can work them out. If you are unable to, you can always book a webcam and I will fix them.

1-4............by the time you get to the fast speed, the effects of the flaws are evident. The flaws are that 4 is not flexing enough, it is too extended. by the time you get to the 1st string, your hand is angling.

The other flaw is that 1 is not bending enough as it moves string to string. It also impels the hand to angle.

both these things create great tension in the arm and upper body, which increases the faster you go. You have "adjusted" to this tension, so you have to be careful as you back out of your present technical configuration and attempt to restructure it.

On 1-3 and 1-2 these flaws are less intense, and causing less damage to overall form.

All your notes are good at this speed. You would have to push it further so we could see what breaks down when you do break down. That would be a necessary step in increasing speed. You must also work with other patterns now in order to see the areas of improvement in these basic moves. For instance, I wonder how ready 4 is during 1-3.............we would not know until you worked with 1-3-4.

I also don't like the look of the hand/wrist/arm relationship in 1-2...........they should be straight in line with each other, (I am talking the horizontal plane, not the necessary curvature of the wrist in the vertical plane.

Thanks for the post Axe, good work and part of the necessary process. Oh, and let me mention for you and others........when you post for this forum, please title the video as "GuitarPrinciples Foundation Ex. for review by Jamie Andreas at www.guitarprinciples.com............. that will be good for our site promo.........thanks!
Best,
Jamie

Hi Jamie!

Thanks for the response! I'll focus on the things you noted.
Would you recommend me to work on this things parallel to "Beyond the walking exercises" or better to start the course after I have fixed them!?

Do that course now. It will begin to develop the hand in new ways, and my improve the things I mentioned.
Best,
Jamie
