Mt top 5 are a tie between:

George Lynch - Dream Warriors (Beast from the East version)...I dig his distinctive style, and vibrato.

Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover...Very expressive.

Pat Metheny - Doesn't matter, just see him live.

Alex Skolnick - The Ballad...speed and emotion

Yngwie Malmsteen - Black Star...He changed the face of guitar, as much as EVH

Vito Bratta - Wait...Everything Vito Does is tasteful, classy, and means something

Reb Beach - 17...Awesome attitude and tapping technique

Vernon Reid - Cult of Personality...Free jazz, metal, and ferocity mixed.

Carl Sanders - Barra Edinazzu...A unique blend of Death metal and egyptian/mesopotamian influences

Mikeal Akerfeld - Godhead's Lament...What a composer

James Hetfield - Creeping Death...Life before the sellout. When he was the god of thunder

Glen Tipton/KK Downing - The twin guitar attack fully realized

Adrian Smith/Dave Murray - The twin guitar attack made perfect

Haughm/Breyer - And the Great Cold Death of the Earth...Composition, composition, composition

Pick any 5 out of those, and that's my favorite

I just had to comment on the last two posts......
John McLaughlin - After The Rain is EXCELLENT!
Vic Wooten is an INCREDIBLE bass player - I first saw him over ten years ago and was amazed at his command of the instrument.
Lynyrd Skynyrd mention covers at least five guitarists that I know of...Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Ed King, Steve Gaines, Rick Medlocke - all good.

1. Rory Gallagher (Calling Card) Live BBC sessions version
2. Jimi Hendrex (Merman i wish i was)
3. Jimy Page (since i've been loving you)Live version
4. Carlos Santana (black magic woman)
5. Slash (estranged) live also

note:I think everyone should look up rory galagher and listen to him. as far as i know he is pretty unknown in america. He is without doubt the finest guitarist to have come out of ireland. His fans include eric clapton, jimy page, jimi hendrex went to a few of his gigs, john lennon etc. etc. thats my rory galagher advert over with

Also i think a great guitarist is at his(her)best live. It just sounds better to hear a great guitarist live rather than a studio in my opinion. More feeling and very spontaneous are words to describe a great guitarist playing in a live setup. That is just my taste i guess and is the reason for the live versions.

This is a great question...here's my list in no particular order:

1. Warren Haynes (of Gov't Mule/Allman Brothers) - Look Over Yonder Wall off of the Live With A Little Help From Our Friends disc will amaze me until the end of time. I once heard someone call him a "monster" slide player. A perfect definition.

2. Adam Jones (of Tool) - The king of tone (IMO). Not the most amazingly technical player (though the skills he has are honed to perfection), but god I love every riff the man plays. It would be amazingly hard for me to live without this band's music in my life. As for songs, my favorites (as far as guitar goes) are Lateralus, Stinkfist, Ticks & Leeches, Reflection, and Triad. But seriously, everything they do is incredible so if you are interested (and I REALLY hope you are) just go ahead and get one of their albums. I'm sure everyone here had that one record that they would never dream of lending to someone for fear that it would be returned in anything other than pristine condition, or the one that they immediately bought again after it was accidentally broken or scrathed, or the one that at one point they listened to (and still listen to) every single day, or the one that helped them get through every awful situation that life presented them with. Lateralus is the album that does all of that for me.

3. Stevie Ray Vaughan - The only other contender for the king of tone title. If there was ever a person who was born to play guitar, it was Stevie. I guess I don't really need to elaborate on him any more, I know most of you have heard him. But I would really recommend the DVD or VHS video of Live at the El Mocambo. A fountain of inspiration.

4. Mississippi John Hurt - I could listen to this man play all day long. The reason I learned fingerstyle guitar. Big Leg Blues is probably my favorite, but everything he does is just as pleasing.

5. Billy Corgan (of Smashing Pumpkins/Zwan) - This one is a relatively new addition for me. I wasn't really into the Smashing Pumpkins during their prime, but I just recently watched a video of theirs called Vieuphoria, which has a lot of live performances from the early 90s, and...wow. I had no idea Corgan could play and compose the way he does. Another completely inspiring performer...I would recommend Soma, Cherub Rock, and...well, all of Siamese Dream really.

6. Les Claypool (of Primus and Frog Brigade) - A bass player (but guitarist nonetheless). Revolutionary. Nobody was doing and will ever do what Primus did, and no one will ever accuse Les Claypool of being anything less than completely original. Of his Primus stuff: Mr. Knowitall, Tommy the Cat, Pudding Time, The Toys Go Winding Down. Of his other stuff (including frog brigade): The Awakening, Riddles are Abound Tonight, and Whamola (on which he uses a one stringed bass played with a drumstick).

Ok, that's it...I know I elaborated on my picks more than others did but hey, I can't help myself. I hope that if you've never heard of some of these guys, you'll check em out...who knows, they might end up on your next list!

1. Ace Frehley - Shock me live version
2. Ted Nugent - Hibernation
3. Van Halen - Eruption
4. Angus Young - Whole lot of Rosie
6. George Harrison - While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Ok so I'm weird!!!
