Any other Jazz enthusiasts on board?

Postby Mike_Hardin » Sat Oct 23, 2010 12:22 am

Hi, Everybody!
I'm a 29 yo male in Texas. I've been playing guitar for @ 15 years, but feel like I have not progressed in 10. That's why I'm here. I've just started to read the Principles book. I have not even finished it yet. It's great! I'm going to pair it up with Fretboard Logic by Bill Edwards. (also great! read Jamie Andreas's article on fingerboard harmony for an idea-same basic stuff) The main style of guitar I'm interested in is Jazz. But any thing I can do with a pick in my right hand is what I want to learn. I really love the sound of nylon strings but my fingernails are terrible! :(
I have a small split running down the long axis of my fingernail on the middle finger of my right hand. But I've figured out that if I use a specialized pick (stone or wood) I can get a very decent tone from a nylon sting guitar that very closely approximates the sound of ones fingernails. It's a decent compromise, and I won't have to learn two different right hand techniques. ;) And I can finally stop fussing over my fingernails! (hooray!!!) :D
I also like using a metal pick on steel strings. Speaking of which has anyone tried V-Picks? :?:

I love how the emoticons are shaped like picks. :)

G'day Mike. Seems we have a bit in common. I love picking the hell out of my classical guitar, I have tried the V-Picks, and yes i love Jazz (also African, Indian, Cuban, World Music it's called these days.....)

Jazz is such a generic term. My favourite guitarists are Bill Frissell, the incredible late Ted Greene, and also the late Joe Pass. These guys played/play in a deep meditation, letting the music flow through them. NO THINKING ALLOWED!! I realised one day that I have no desire whatsoever to "deconstruct" my favourite players. In other words the music is so individual, with a unique voice, that I had no desire to say the same things on the guitar. I wish I could play like the best, but not play their music note for note. I leave that for the popular rock/singer/songwriter stuff..........I am getting of track here I think :D

I have tried the V-picks. I like the thick hard quality of the picks, but they are a bit chirpy. I should play around with the edges as the maker suggests. i find it hard to stray from my trusty Dunlop Jazz III's. I just love those picks.

I am a big Jose Feliciano fan. Check out some You Tube clips of him. Pure fire and passion picking the nylon strings.

Cheers, Pete

Hey man, welcome.
Fretboard Logic is a great book, I learned all the scales from it. I too love jazz. My favorite is Django, and some day I hope to be able to play that stuff, although I have different priorities now. Feel free to post up videos of your jazz playing. Cheers.

Hi, imho Principles are so great because they are not concerned with any style, they don't tell you what to play but how to play whatever you like ...
