Strumming & Singing

Most people begin to learn guitar by learning a few chords, and then learning to strum and sing a song. This is a good way to learn, but it requires that you are able to change chords smoothly, and be able to keep a steady strum while you sing.

Many guitar students, however, do NOT learn to strum chords smoothly, and besides, they are afraid to sing! This is not good. To be a good guitar player, you must be able to do these things, even if you never plan on singing in public.

After we do learn to strum and sing to a steady beat, most players want to be able to do something more with their chords, such as adding alternate basses, or bass lines, or runs in between chords.

Here you will find information on why and how to learn to strum and sing, and also how to extends these skills.

Adding Vocals While Playing Guitar

After learning our first chords, we should begin to add the vocal over the strum. This means, essentially, learning to play two instruments at once! Here are some important tips on doing that.

Proper Form on the G7 Chord

This supposedly easy guitar chord can be quite a challenge to do easily. It requires the first finger to be flexed back all the way to the 1st string, while the 3rd finger is stretched out to the 6th.

Finger Overlap: Necessary for Many Chords

"Finger Overlap" on guitar means squeezing 2 or more fingertips together on the left hand so that the tips overlap each other. This enables us to get our fingers into some small spaces!

The Best Left Hand Position For Chords

There is a lot of confusion about how the left hand should approach various guitar playing situations. Thumb under, or over? Hand against the neck or out and away? It depends on the playing context.

The Slap Strum

Using the "slap strum" is a great way to add some nice percussive effect to your guitar strumming. Here is how to learn to do it.
