If you're not getting better on guitar, then you are not practicing correctly...you are going in the wrong direction. When you are going in the wrong direction, you don't wait another 100 miles before you turn around!

One of the biggest mistakes guitar students make is thinking they should wait "till they get somewhere on their own" before taking a guitar lesson. What they don't know is that most of the playing problems that make playing a struggle start in the beginning and get reinforced every time you practice!

If this is you, then you need a "direct intervention". That is where I come in..........

A Message from Jamie......"I invite anyone and everyone, regardless of level or style, to come to me for lessons and fulfill your guitar playing dreams. It's always been a great pleasure for me to lead lovers of the guitar to the fulfillment of their dreams with the instrument. In fact, The Principles came into being because of my lifelong commitment to make it possible for anyone to play the guitar who sincerely wants to."

I'm ready - how do I book lessons with Jamie?

Here is a tour through a lesson with Leanne from Pennsylvania, who took a 4 day intensive series of lessons with me...........

Jamie & Leanne getting ready for a lesson. Leanne has been working on the guitar part to "Blackbird" by the Beatles.

Jamie listens and watches while Leanne plays.

Jamie notices a common problem in the right hand.

"How many fingers am I holding up?"

Jamie asks some tough questions while explaining the source of the problem with a little lesson in anatomy.

I've studied with Jamie several times a year for the past few years, so I had a pretty good idea what I was getting into with the 5-day intensive study. I was very excited to have the opportunity and I wasn't disappointed.

Jamie's lessons are always intense, focused and fun! The areas we covered over the 5 days were pretty much up to me to decide, with Jamie only making a few suggestions about things she wanted to check up on. I came away with a lot to digest and work on, and feeling much more confident about what I've got to do to slove the problems I have now, and continue to improve my playing.

Jamie demonstrates how the muscle between the index and thumb (the 1st dorsal interosseous) is tensing with sympathetic tension as the thumb is playing, pulling the index out of position, and making it difficult to control.   A hands on approach is often  required when fixing a students' specific problems.

No tense pinkies allowed during fingerstyle playing.

Now that the problem has been analyzed, and the solution explained, it is time to do a work up with the Basic Practice Approach.

Jamie watches carefully for any tension or loss of form. This is called "quality control".

"From a personal standpoint, I have a renewed focus on the guitar. I have a better understanding of how I can fit practice into a really busy schedule and how I can make the absolute best use of my practice time. I also feel I have a better handle on what my goals are and what I need to do specifically to achieve them. Most importantly, I know I can do it.

I also came back immediately with much more confidence in myself as a teacher, knowing that the type of teaching I offer is really valuable and unique and that I can produce results in students. This confidence is especially important to me as I am still very much a student myself."

Leanne

Oops, while working up the speed on this passage, we hit a speed that has made a finger mis-behave. We must stop and fix that!

Jamie points directly to the finger that is mis-behaving. We must know exactly what finger is causing a problem when fixing our playing.

Jamie demonstrates relaxed functioning of the fingers on the problem passage.   After going over the correct motions with the problem finger, it's back to working up the speed on the passage.
"I teach students the critical things to pay attention to when practicing, and why and how to pay attention to them. Then, they know how to practice for effective results on their own. This is how we keep getting better on guitar!...Jamie
