BASIC FACTS ABOUT HAMMERS & PULLS ON GUITAR...

1) Hammer-ons and pull-offs on guitar are extremely difficult to do to - to do well, that is. Unless your fingers have exactly the right training you're going to struggle with them every time you come across them in the music you play.

4) You need special exercises that are specifically designed to give your fingers this ability.

5) Hammer-On and Pull-Off practice on guitar builds great strength and control into the fingers and you will notice an improvement in everything you play.

Hammer-Ons & Pull-Offs Are A Problem for all guitar students!

As a teacher of ALL styles for over 50 years, I learned that all guitar students find hammer-ons and pull-offs either difficult, or impossible to do!

And I am the type of teacher who is just not happy unless my students are successful on guitar. I cannot tolerate failure on my part when it comes to enabling my students to really do the various skills we must learn on guitar. So, over the years, I made it my business to figure out foolproof methods for training the hand, anyone's hand, to play hammer-ons and pull-offs on guitar, and to play them easily

You've been struggling with  hammer-ons and pull-offs long enough, time to stop the struggling

The Typical Lesson On Hammers/Pulls Is Just Not Good Enough!

All you get is tab showing you what your fingers need to do, not HOW to train them to do it!

This Course Is Not Just TAB!...you get detailed instructions on how to use and place each finger for EASY and ACCURATE playing of hammer-ons and pull-offs.

This is what you get with most  "lessons" on hammers & pulls. A simple diagram merely showing you where your fingers are supposed to go...and then you try to get your fingers to go there! Yeah, that works!

That would be like taking a golf lesson, and they just show you a picture of the hole the ball is supposed to go in!

With "Hammers & Pulls Essential Training" You Get...

THE anatomy of a hammer-on from an open string

The micro-details of how the fingers need to work when doing hammer-ons from an open string. This is a special, but common variety of hammer-on used on guitar.

When practiced correctly, as you will learn to do, it gives great strength and control to the fingers, far beyond what scale practice achieves.

THE anatomy of a hammer-on from a fretted note

hammers-fretted-note

This is the most common type of hammer-on. It requires extra strength and control to perform. It must be practiced in a very careful way, using the "3 Procedures For Hammer-On Practice".

THE 3 PROCEDURES FOR HAMMER-ON PRACTICE

3 procedures for hammer-on practice

This practice method will insure that your hammer fingers works with precision. Without using this method, your fingers will not have accuracy as they attempt the hammer-on. With this method, your practice will bring powerful results.

how to avoid "joint collapse"

joint-collapse with hammer-ons

"Joint Collapse" happens to many student fingers. As the finger presses on the string with the extra force required to do a hammer on the middle joint of the finger collapses and ruins the hammer-on.

In this course you will learn how to fix this and avoid it.

THE anatomy of a pull-off

anatomy-pull-offs

Pull-offs are even more difficult than hammers for student fingers. They require great strength from the fingers, but correct practice of pull-offs gives incredible strength to the fingers.

Put away the "grip trainer" and get super-strong guitar fingers by practicing pull-offs the way you will learn in this course.

Speed must be developed carefully using step-by-step methods. You will learn those methods in this course.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTION FOR ELECTRIC GUITAR

The technique for doing hammers & pulls is different for electric guitar than acoustic. You will learn why your hand should first develop strength with hammers & pulls on an acoustic guitar.

Then, you will learn how to adjust your hand and finger position for doing these essential techniques on electric guitar.

A Major Problem: When you do hammers & pulls, the fingers you are not using will tense up and stick up in the air. This is very bad, because those fingers will need to play next, after the hammer or pull, and they will have lots of trouble doing it. This causes lots of playing mistakes.

No Other Exercise Will Train Your Inactive Fingers To Stay Relaxed and Ready to Play As The Active Finger Hammers Or Pulls

Video 2:

Hammers To An Open String with 2,3,and 4

We continue to train each finger to stay relaxed while other fingers hammer and/or pull. This is extremely important, because tension induced in the inactive fingers is a major cause of mistakes in playing. Why?

Well, because those fingers are going to be used next - and if they  are tense you will not be able to control and use them.

Video 3: Hammer-Ons From A Fretted Note With 1-4

This is the most common type of hammer-on,  where a finger is fretting a note, and another finger hammers. It is necessary  to train each pair of fingers to do this. This is the first finger combination, fingers 1 and 4.

Video 4: Hammer-Ons From A Fretted Note With 1-3

The big challenge when hammering with the 3rd finger is keeping the little finger relaxed and close to the strings. When the ring finger hammers, the little finger will pull away from the string. That is a problem when the little finger is needed next!

You will teach your little finger to stay relaxed when 3 hammers by using the "touching technique" taught in this course.

Video 5: Hammer-Ons From A Fretted Note With 1-2

The big challenge when hammering with the 2nd finger is keeping the ring finger relaxed and close to the strings. When the 2nd finger  hammers, the ring finger will pull away from the string. That is a problem when the ring  finger is needed next!

You will teach your ring finger to stay relaxed when 2 hammers by using the "touching technique" taught in this course.

Video 6: Building Speed With 2 Finger Hammers

The secret of mastering any technique on guitar is to learn it super slowly at first -then build speed gradually using the metronome.

You will learn exactly how to do that with all 2 finger hammer combinations.

Video 7: Making Weak Fingers Strong

Your ring finger and little finger are weak and hard to control. This causes lots of mistakes and playing problems.

You will learn how to strengthen these weak fingers with the careful practice methods that must be used to make these fingers stronger than you ever thought possible.

Video 8: 3 Finger Hammers

3 Finger Hammer-Ons take your finger ability  to another level. These hammers are used in all styles of guitar and give an even higher level of finger ability when practiced correctly.

You will learn all the secrets of these advanced techniques.

Video 9: Building Even More Speed With Hammers

This 21 minute video is a goldmine of technical development. Every hammer combination is demonstrated from slow to very fast.

You will play along with this to development your speed with all hammer combinations.

Video 10: Pull Offs To An Open String

In this video we are introduced to pull-offs. Pull-Offs require more finger strength than any other technique. They also build more strength in the fingers - when practiced correctly.

You will learn how to begin pull-off practice correctly in this video.

Video 11:  Pull Offs From A Fretted Note

Pull-offs to a fretted note build great finger strength. They require the vigorous action of 2 fingers. One is called the pulling finger, the other is called the receiving finger.

Each finger must perform its role perfectly. You will learn how to do that in this video.

Video 12: Building Speed With 2 Finger Pull-Offs

I guide you as you build speed on all finger combinations using the Basic Practice Approach. Nothing is left to chance in your practice as you see me do each finger combination from slow to fast.

Video 13: 3 Finger Pull-Offs

3 Finger Pull-Offs take this technique to an even higher level. Using 3 fingers builds even more strength and control in the fingers.

Video 14: Advanced Combinations For Daily Practice

A powerful collection of additional finger combinations that bring your finger ability to the professional level. You'll find these combinations in the music you love.

Video 15: Hammers & Pulls While Holding A Bar

What can make your fingers even stronger than the previous exercises? Doing hammers and pulls while you hold a bar across the strings.

Video 15: Trills While Holding 1 & 2 Down

A trill is a hammer followed by a pull and both repeated over and over. Here you will hold some fingers down while hammering and pulling with other fingers.

Bar Chords Have Never Been Broken Down

To This Level of Detail Before

Did you know there are many types of bar chords? In order to play the songs you love, you need to know...

The Curved Bar

This bar type should be used for the common 6th & 5th Root Major Chords. It is easier on the hand than the flat bar.

5th root bar

The Flat Bar

This bar type takes the most strength and should only be used when necessary. Some bar chords need it, some don't.

The 3 String Bar

This bar type requires a specific use of the finger joints. You will learn how to use your finger to do this often used bar type easily.

The 4 String Bar

For this bar type a flat bar must be used. Certain hand muscles must be strengthened  to do this chord easily.

The 3rd Finger Bar

The 3rd finger must do a bar for many of the chord types you will need. The arm weight must be leveraged, and the finger joints must bend in certain precise ways.

The Inside Bar

Here the index finger bars the inside strings. This is needed for certain chords, like this first position a chord.

Tension In

The Non-Barring Fingers

The greatest obstacle to easy bar chords is tension in the non-barring fingers. Here we see great tension, making the fingers squeeze against the bar. Look familiar?

FAQ

How long do I get access to the course? Is it lifetime access? Is there any flexibility in the pace of the course?

Yes – by purchasing enrolment for this course, you’ll get lifetime access to the course materials. I’ve designed the course in this way because no two people are the same when it comes to the duration of time it takes to develop technique. I wanted to allow all participants to have permanent, ongoing access to the course materials so that they can develop their technique on a schedule that suits them.

I have limited time to practice - I'm worried I won't have enough time. Is it still worth doing this course?

Definitely! Because this course includes lifetime access, treat it as a complete resource for developing your bar chord technique for many years to come. So I would still recommend you check this course out even if you have limited practice time at the moment.

Note that developing your bar chord technique doesn’t necessarily mean spending hours and hours on exercises. By doing only a small amount of the right exercises daily with the right approach, you can make drastic improvements to your bar chord ability – even with limited time available.

What if I need to go on holiday or a work trip during the course?

As mentioned above, the course has lifetime access without a fixed deadline, so you can develop your technique on a schedule that suits you. I realized I needed to structure the course like this because everyone develops technique at a different pace, so it was only fair to give lifetime access to this course for this reason.

Do I have to submit assignments for this course?

No, there are no formal assignments for this course.

What exactly is included in this course? What is the course format? Are the video lessons live, or pre-recorded?

The course consists of high-quality pre-recorded video lessons, which you can either watch online or download for later viewing. You can watch the videos at any time that suits your schedule. The video lessons come complete with detailed explanations of why and how each exercise works to give you the ability to play all bar chord types easily.

What will this course help me achieve?

This course will give you a sure-fire solution to all the difficulties all guitar players face when it comes to playing bar chords. Through learning the core exercises contained in the course, you’ll quickly develop and improve every aspect of the techniques needed to play bar chords easily.

By doing the course, you’ll drastically improve the ease with which you play bar chords and change bar chords. The result of all this is that you’ll be able to confidently tackle any song you want to learn, no matter how many difficult bar chords it has!

This means you'll be able to focus more on your music-making – and less on your hands.

Are the video portions of the lessons downloadable? Will I be able to keep the course materials, including the text explanations of each exercise?

Yes! All the lesson materials, including the videos, are downloadable. Remember though, you’re going to get lifetime access to the course anyway - so the online version will always be available for you to access.

Can you clarify at what level of playing this course is pitched at? Is it something aimed more at the intermediate/advanced players, or beginner guitar players as well?

Even though most people think of bar chords as “advanced”, the simple fact is that you can begin to train your fingers to do bar chords easily – right from the beginning of playing! You will find that even though these exercises are geared toward bar chords, they will help you will all other chords you play as well, because they will give you less finger tension and more control.

Will beginners be able to participate in this course?

Yes – beginners absolutely should participate in this course, to provide you with a solid technical foundation that you can build upon as you progress in learning all chords, not just bar chords.

I play more blues and rock - will this benefit my technique for these styles?

Yes. Bar chords are used in every style of music. This course will benefit you no matter what style you play.

Do I need any special equipment to participate?

No – all you need is a computer or a device like an iPad or mobile phone with Internet access to access the course. Submitting work is not compulsory for this course so there is no need to own any special recording equipment.

Can you run this course on my iPad or mobile phone, or is it just for a desktop computer?

The course will work perfectly on any desktop computer or tablet with access to the Internet. You can still access the course content with a mobile phone, but the easiest way to use the course would be through a computer or tablet.

Am I too old to get better at my technique?

As long as you’re alive, you can get better at guitar technique.

The reason: It’s been proven that the brain continues to grow new neurons and make new neural connections every single day of your life. Although it might be slightly faster for a younger person to develop technique than an older person, you can definitely still make fabulous progress regardless of your age. Try not to get into the mindset that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” – that is rubbish. If you believe that, then you won’t maximize your full potential on the guitar.

Can I pay with a credit card?

Yes – we have fully encrypted Stripe payment processing for credit cards, as well as PayPal if you prefer that option.

Is there any ongoing financial commitment/subscription?

No – this course is a one-time fee for lifetime access, and you won't be charged any monthly subscription for this program.

About the Teacher

The guitar instruction that Jamie Andreas has created has long been recognized for its uniqueness and effectiveness. As concert artist and teacher Vicki Genfan said:

"Jamie has challenged every major conception about every teaching method ever invented for guitar... and I think she's right.
I love her work and preach it all the time!"

vicki genfan on the principles

"There's hardly any students I don't recommend look at her work. It made a light bulb go off for me"!

"The more I talked to Jamie, the more impressed I became"...Dr. Gary Marcus, Guitar Zero, Penguin Books

Jamie was interviewed by Dr. Gary Marcus for his classic work, "Guitar Zero", on the science of how adults learn a complex skill like guitar. He said: "Jamie is one of the few teachers who seems interested in the relationship between muscle and brain, and how to use one’s body efficiently.

Swim coaches and golf teachers consider such questions all the time, but it’s decidedly rare in the field of music instruction.

She views guitarists the way auto mechanics look at cars; she recognized a host of common problems, has a set of tools for diagnosis, and had a matching set of tricks for making things right.

What Makes Guitar Principles Different?

We Build Guitar Players...Step by Step!
